When a person tells someone, “I will stand by you no matter what,” that sentence no longer remains an expression of love; it becomes a weakness. And the other person begins to see it the same way. Then, instead of simply showing us difficult circumstances, they push us into them. Sometimes beneath the weight of their desires, and sometimes through the wounds caused by their carelessness.
We keep enduring everything because we made a promise... and they keep testing us because we made a promise.
What a strange game of loyalty it is—the one who remains faithful is the one who breaks, while the one who benefits is the one who never even bothered to understand the value of loyalty.
Perhaps this is life’s bitterest lesson: standing by someone through every circumstance sounds beautiful, but only until the other person turns you into fuel for every circumstance they face.
